History

Although the Philomathean Literary Society has been in operation since 1842, and received its Charter from the State of South Carolina in 1852, it was inspired directly by a much older tradition.

Students of the Society looked to the experience of their faculty and trends at other American schools, which borrowed from abroad, during their first meetings.
