The Gay Nineties

The “Gay Nineties” commemorated the enthusiasm and optimism of the South following the Reconstruction period. The event was held from 1970 until 2005, typically on the same weekend as the Pre-Gay formal and the Mint Julep near the end of the school year.

Pre-Gay Semi-Formal

The Pre-Gay Semi-Formal was held on the Friday night before the Gay Nineties. Organized by the Philomeleans, it was held indoors, often at Greenwood Country Club, and included a formal dinner and dancing.

Mint Julep Social

The Mint Julep Social was typically held on the Sunday night following the Gay Nineties. It had its own planning committee composed of Erskine students from many associations, with Philomatheans and Philomeleans often making up the majority.

Engagement traditions

Engagements have been celebrated by Philomatheans and Philomeleans through their own traditions, including the Philomathean serenade and the Philomelean candle-lighting.

The Smoker

The Smoker is held early in the school year to introduce potential Philomathean members to the society and its meetings.
